Pesinet’s overall aim is to reduce child and maternal mortality by spreading prevention services in a 5 km circle around each partnering medical centre.

We designed our data collection and treatment system to include key health and economical statistics that we use to track our impact. Statistics are made available in restricted access with different levels of display ( by program, by region, by country).

Our social outcomes are in five main areas:

>> Reduced mortality
Mortality on our subscribing base is today very low (5 per thousand in comparison with a 150 per thousand average n the capital city covered). We estimate that Pesinet can prevent 80% of mortality causes from benign diseases, hence a reduction of more than half of child mortality in the populations covered by the service.

>> Reduced health spending on benign illnesses
Preventing the need for costly treatment in hospitals leads to a reduction in health spending of families as well as in public spending, allowing for a shift in public resource allocation from non-necessary emergency operations to needed health investment.

>> Increased prevention and sanitation
Our mix of early detection system and awareness-raising programs allows a higher number of people to have a contact with a doctor before getting critically ill. We assess our efficiency in bringing about social change and raising the value of prevention by tracking in our database the number of patients who do not come to the doctor when asked to by our agents and the number of days before the patient comes to the doctor when asked to. This shows if subscribers do alter their behaviour and trust the concept of prevention.

>> Job creation
Providing secure jobs to our employees is a major positive side-effect of Pesinet, especially since people we recruit have often been unemployed for years. The labour market in Mali for instance shows large-scale underemployment (44.7%), an extending informal sector (87% of jobs) and an average rate of 7.7% unemployment which hides great disparities between urban and rural situations with the unemployment rate reaching 17% in Bamako and 12.3% in other cities, for an average unemployment period of 5 years. Unemployment mostly affects women and young people.

>> Skill development
Our employees receive free medical training. They also develop managerial and commercial skills opening-up new job opportunities for them. Working for Pesinet also increase their self-esteem as they are given major responsibilities and work as the agent of change in their communities. They are recognised for their know-how.
